OUR KNITTED GLOVES FIRST MODEL (left). A fine crochet chain, worked separately and laid on the wrong side, is sewn onto the lost-stitch pattern of the knit, following the interlacing shown at actual size opposite. SECOND MODEL (middle). A simple herringbone stitch, worked with a blunt tapestry needle, over 3 stitches in width and height of stockinette. 2 rows per stitch, striping the back of the hand and continuing up each finger. THIRD MODEL (right). Three or four bright shades are used to embroider this pretty motif in closely worked satin stitch and stem stitch. INSTRUCTIONS, size 6 1/2–7 Cast on 53 sts, work 30 rows of fine rib for the cuff, then stockinette stitch. On the 3rd row, begin the thumb increases: work 23 sts for the palm, 1 increase, 3 sts for the thumb, 1 increase, 27 sts for the back of the hand. Every 4 rows, repeat these 2 increases directly above the previous ones. For the thumb you will therefore have, in turn: 5, 7, 9 sts, etc. Once you have 65 sts, stop increasing. On row 32, work the 23 palm sts, cast on 4 sts in a row, place the 15 thumb sts on a stitch holder and work the 27 sts for the back of the hand. On these 54 sts, work 10 more rows. Place on stitch holders the first 6 palm sts and the last 7 back-of-hand sts for the little finger. Cast on 2 extra sts at each side of the remaining sts and work 4 more rows. Then knit each finger separately, placing the rest of the sts on stitch holders. Ring finger — 7 palm sts, 3 extra sts, 8 back-of-hand sts. Work 30 rows; shape the decreases at each side at the end, then cast off. Middle finger — 2 extra sts, 5 palm sts, 3 extra sts, 7 back-of-hand sts and 2 extra sts. Work 4 rows more than for the ring finger. Index finger — 2 extra sts, the remaining sts, and 2 extra sts. Same length as the ring finger. Little finger — 6 palm sts, 3 extra sts, 7 back-of-hand sts; work 22 rows, decrease and cast off. Thumb — Cast on 1 st, take up the 15 sts left on hold and cast on 4 extra sts. Work 26 rows, decrease and cast off. Finish by closing the outer side of the hand and each finger with an overcast seam, using a blunt tapestry needle threaded with yarn, passing under the corresponding selvedge stitches on each edge. Take care always to slip this selvedge stitch without knitting it at the start of each row, so as to have neat edges that allow a flat, even seam. Make the second glove the same way, in mirror image. These three models, each with a different trim, are knitted very simply flat on 2 needles, in fine ribbing for the cuff and stockinette stitch for the hand. For each pair of gloves, use 60 to 75 g (2.1–2.6 oz) of not-too-thick yarn (or the equivalent weight in cotton), and 2 needles size 2.5 mm (≈ US 1½).
