BABY CARDIGAN, for 18 months This cardigan is made in baby (layette) wool or in white, sky-blue or pink knitting cotton. You will need about 100 g (3.5 oz) of yarn and 2 needles size 3.5 mm (US 4). STITCHES USED Garter stitch: knit every row. Seed stitch: *k1, p1*. On the return row, purl all. Always work these two rows, but reversing the purl and knit stitches. INSTRUCTIONS Front: Cast on 36 sts. Work 10 rows garter stitch, then work straight in seed stitch, but always working the 5 border sts in garter stitch. At 15 cm (6 in) from the bottom, work entirely in garter stitch and shape the armhole by binding off 5 sts. At 20 cm (7¾ in), shape the neckline by binding off 6 sts, then 2 sts three times. Bind off the 18 shoulder sts straight across once the armhole measures 9 cm (3½ in) high. Work the other front to match. Back: Cast on 70 sts. Work 10 rows garter stitch and work straight in seed stitch until 15 cm (6 in) from the bottom. Shape the armholes by binding off 4 sts at each side. Work in garter stitch for 9 cm (3½ in) high. Bind off straight across. Sleeve: Cast on 46 sts, work 10 rows garter stitch, continue straight in seed stitch until 18 cm (7 in) from the bottom. Then bind off 3 sts at a time at each side. Finishing: Sew the shoulder and side seams. Sew in the sleeves. Work 2 rows garter stitch at the neckline. Add a ribbon.
