THE BOY'S SWEATER It can be made in two colors, in jacquard stitch, or in a single color by working the second color's stitches as purl on the right side. To do this, follow the charted design, working the black squares in reverse (purl) and the white squares as knit on the right side. In the jacquard sweater, the waistband, cuffs and collar are in the dark colored yarn. SWEATER FOR A 7-YEAR-OLD BOY YOU WILL NEED: 250 g (8.8 oz) of plain yarn or 150 g (5.3 oz) dark and 100 g (3.5 oz) light; 4 needles size 2.5 mm (≈ US 1½). STITCHES USED: Ribbing: *k1, p1*. Stockinette stitch: *k1 row, p1 row*. INSTRUCTIONS. — Front: Cast on 90 sts and work 5 cm (2 in) of ribbing. Continue in plain jacquard stockinette, working the pattern rows. Work straight until 23 cm (9 in) from the cast-on edge. Shape the armholes by decreasing 4 sts at each side, then 2 sts twice, then 1 st every 2 rows. At 32 cm (12½ in) from the bottom, shape the neckline. Leave 12 sts at the center on hold, and decrease at each side of these sts, 1 st 10 times every 2 rows. Bind off the shoulder sts in 3 stages. Back: Work as for the front, but at 35 cm (13¾ in) from the bottom, bind off a third of the sts for each shoulder in 3 stages. Leave the remaining center sts on hold. Sleeves: Cast on 50 sts, and work 4.5 cm (1¾ in) of ribbing. Continue in stockinette stitch, increasing 1 st at each side every 2 cm (¾ in). At 30 cm (11¾ in) from the top total, shape the cap by decreasing 3 sts, then 2 sts 5 times, then 1 st 12 times at each side every 2 rows. Bind off the remaining sts straight across. FINISHING: Press each piece under a damp cloth. Sew the shoulder and side seams. Sew in the sleeves, then pick up the neckline sts on 4 needles, about 80 sts. Work 6 cm (2¼ in) of ribbing. Cast off loosely.
