MY LITTLE BOY'S LAYETTE Here, with their reduced-scale pattern, are a few designs to help you put together a practical, complete wardrobe for a boy. 1. Romper-pinafore in tartan gingham. It gathers under a yoke buttoned at the back; the leg openings are gathered with elastic run through the hem. The back-tied sash is cut on the straight grain. Buttons at the crotch. (1.50 m / 1⅝ yd of 80 cm (31½ in)–wide fabric.) 2. Blouse in white silk-like fabric. The fullness of the front and back is gathered into smocking under a yoke. Round collar, puff sleeves. 3. A simpler blouse, in linen or flannel, trimmed with a few gathers and rickrack braid. 4. Another blouse on the same pattern. Trimmed with topstitching, in silk cloth, cotton or flannel, it is worn with shorts with straps, in wool fabric or velvet. (Shorts: 0.55 m / ⅝ yd of 140 cm (55 in)–wide fabric.) 5. A little suit in grey flannel, cut from the same patterns. Shorts without straps, buttoned onto the blouse. The blouse is trimmed with pretty embroidery. Chevron stitch and satin stitch worked in white and red wool. 6. Opening at the front, the shirt is easy to put on. Make it in percale, following the pattern. Leave a double 3 cm (1¼ in) turn-back at the front edges to form the button placket. Carefully press the rounded cut-out flat along the neckline. (0.75 m / ⅞ yd of 100 cm (39¼ in)–wide fabric.) 7. This smart coat in navy or brown wool fabric is trimmed with tone-on-tone velvet. At the fronts, the shaded section is lined with a facing of the same shape. At the back, two inverted pleats set into the yoke are caught in at the waist under a half-belt. (1.60 m / 1¾ yd of 120 cm (47¼ in)–wide fabric.) The matching little cap has 6 panels for the crown. For the peak, make a stiff cardboard shape before covering it with fabric. On all the diagrams, the double dotted lines show the seamless center fold of the pieces. Measurements are for 3 or 4 years old. Seam and hem allowances are not included.
